Towards Integrated Agricultural Marketing
National Agriculture Market (e-NAM)
The National Agriculture Market (e-NAM),
launched in April 2016, is a pan-India electronic trading platform aimed at
integrating the fragmented APMC markets into a unified national market. Fully
funded by the Central Government and implemented by the Small Farmers
Agribusiness Consortium (SFAC), the platform seeks to promote transparency,
real-time price discovery, and competitive trade practices in agricultural
commodities.
Objectives and Design
e-NAM strives to ensure uniformity in
agricultural marketing by streamlining procedures, eliminating information
asymmetry, and enabling farmers to access a larger pool of buyers. Its key
objectives include:
- Integration
of APMCs across states.
- Promotion
of transparent online trading and e-payments.
- Establishment
of quality assaying systems.
- Ensuring
better price realization for farmers.
States are required to undertake specific
APMC reforms—electronic trading provisions, a single trading license across the
state, and unified market fee—to qualify for integration.
Key Features and Innovations
e-NAM provides single-window access to
mandi information including arrivals, quality, prices, and payments.
Innovations such as the FPO trading module, warehouse-based trading via e-NWR,
AI-based assaying, and the Platform of Platforms (POP) have expanded its scope.
Achievements and Impact
As of March 2023, over 1.75 crore farmers,
2.43 lakh traders, and 2,575 FPOs are registered. A total of 1,361 mandis
across 23 states and 4 UTs have been integrated. Cumulative trade has exceeded
₹2.5 lakh crore. The initiative was awarded the Platinum Digital India Award in
2022.
e-NAM represents a critical reform in agri-marketing by reducing market fragmentation, enhancing transparency, and empowering farmers. It complements the vision of “One Nation, One Market,” with the potential to transform agricultural value chains and farmer incomes.
