Maligaon's tryst with electricity commenced with a 9.63kW solar microgrid powered by lead-acid batteries, illuminating homes with light bulbs and fans. Facilitated by Gram Vikas and the Bushlight Programme, this microgrid marked the initial step towards energy inclusion for over 50 households. However, challenges persisted due to erratic main grid supply, hindering livelihood activities.

Revival and Renewal: The Lithium-Ion Leap

In 2017, philanthropic funding revitalised the microgrid with lithium-ion technology, empowering it to support three-phase loads. This transformation enabled enhanced reliability and encouraged entrepreneurial ventures within the village. Testimonies from Nakul Nayak, a printing shop owner, and Laxman Naik, the village development committee secretary and farmer, underscored the newfound opportunities brought by consistent electricity supply.

Challenges Amidst Progress: Remote Realities

The village's remote location posed challenges in maintaining the microgrid, resulting in technical complexities and increased costs for Gram Vikas. The transition to complete community ownership faced hurdles due to village politics and technical intricacies, impacting seamless integration into daily life. Moreover, Maligaon’s agricultural backbone yearned for uninterrupted water pump access during non-monsoon months, a goal yet to be realized due to microgrid limitations.

With an expanded microgrid capacity and dreams of increased connectivity, Maligaon aspires to transform its agricultural landscape by harnessing surrounding water resources. However, the realization of these aspirations hinges on collaborative measures and innovative solutions.

Proposed solutions include initiatives like net-metering to prevent energy wastage and enhance economic sustainability. Additionally, concerted efforts by main-grid suppliers to provide three-phase connections could unlock the true potential of decentralised energy, bolstering rural livelihoods.
